While Europe and the US is stuck with Wap, i-mode is taking Japan by storm. The latest devices from Microsoft's PocketPC division have been developed so that GPRS attachments can easily be slotted onto the devices once they become available. PDA manufacturers are currently working with the mobile operators on ways in which they can develop add-ons to handheld devices that convert the PDA into a GPRS phone. Clearly, like Wap handsets, these handsets will no doubt be subsidised to drive mass market uptake. It is expected that the GPRS service and handsets will be rolled out to consumers at the beginning of 2001. The BT Cellnet service, PocketNet Office, is only available to corporate users at present and costs £45 per month for 50mb of data traffic (different pricing plans apply with GPRS), plus around £199 for the handset (Motorola Timeport) and standard charges for voice calls. BT Cellnet was the first UK network to launch GPRS services in the summer this year, although the other networks claim to be close behind.
